Learn How to Use the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop

The Quick Selection tool is great for making simple selections fast. It’s the same steps as the Magic Wand except, you use the Quick Selection Tool.

Quick Selection Makes Simple Selection Fast

Paint brush a loose selection using an adjustable round brush tip to select the area you want. As you are painting with the Quick Selection tool, the selection expands outward and automatically finds and follows defined edges in the image. We will use the same image as the one for the Magic Wand, Sears-MagicWand.tif

Select the Quick Selection tool on the toolbox
The Quick Selection control panel icons

  1. Click the Tool Preset list arrow and then select from the available presets
  2. Drag the Quick Selection brush over the object you want to choose
  3. You can decrease the size of the brush to choose smaller details. Hold down the Alt/Option key to alternate between adding or subtracting from the selection.
  4. Choose the Sample All Layers checkbox to create a selection based on all layers, not just the currently selected one.
  5. Pick the Auto-Enhance box to reduce roughness and pixelation in the selection edge.
  6. Select and Mask, refine edge, apply refinements, such as feathering, to your selections.
    Quick Selection Refine Edge Properties

If you need to and are having issues with the edges, use the refine edge. When you’ve made the best selection you can, go to Select > Refine Edge.

  • With the Refine Edge tool, draw along the edges of the selection.
  • For example, use a smaller brush size for leaves and tree trunk to trace along harder edges
  • Tweak the Adjust Edge sliders to smooth, feather, or harden the edge.
