Creating a New File

  1. Choose File > New (PC: Ctrl-N/ Mac: Cmd-N). The New dialogue opens with recent files and presets.
  2. In the New dialogue box, enter a file name on the right side. Typing a name does not save the document. You still need to save your document after you create it.
  3. Click the Preset list arrow, and then select a preset document, or choose your options to create a custom document.

      • Select from various measurements, Width & Height, such as points, centimetres, or inches.
      • Decide if you want artboards. Think of artboards as ‘pages’ in your document. Creating a website, artboards would be good.
      • Resolution. Select a resolution, such as 72 pixels/inch (PPI) for online/video use and 300 PPI for print.
      • Color Mode. Select a colour mode, such as RGB/CMYK for colour and Grayscale for black/white.
      • Background Contents. Select a background colour or a transparent background.
  4. Before you click OK see the following page about File Resolutions

You may find that you use the same new document size over and over again. To save time, you can save the settings as a preset. In the New dialogue box, click the Preset list arrow, click a document size, and then change the various options to customize your new document. To name your customized preset, type a name in the Name box, and then click Save Preset.
