How to Change Keyboard Shortcuts in Illustrator

InDesign versus Illustrator: Place-Command

If you watched some of my videos, you may have noticed my Place image keyboard shortcut isn’t the default setting of Command/Control Shift P.

In my video tutorial, I will be showing you how to change a keyboard shortcut setting in Illustrator in about 60 seconds!

Because I use InDesign, InDesign uses Command D. Trying to remember keyboard shortcuts can be hard for some, especially me, because my brain feels like its a 100 years old! The old saying is time is money; they don’t pay us to be wasting time. So, I want to use the same keyboard shortcuts in both programs.

I have changed my keyboard settings to reflect the default setting for the placement of images already.

Go to Edit – Keyboard Shortcuts. Locate the menu command. The Place command is under File – Place. Select Place command and hit clear so that you can enter a new command.

You can use the same keyboard shortcut for InDesign or use a command that is more memorable to you. If you use Command D, it will give you a warning that this command is in use, you can either accept it or choose a different one. Speaking for myself, I was okay for it to overwrite the previous command for Transform. Now, I won’t have to remember a new keyboard shortcut for placing in Illustrator or InDesign!

  1. How do you create a shortcut for a command that doesn’t already have one. For instance Select/Same/Fill Color? It won’t let me type anything there.

  2. If the shortcut you want to use is already in use for another command, you can choose to reassign that command to a different shortcut or create a custom shortcut by using a combination of keys.
