How to use the Touch Type Tool Tutorial in Illustrator

How to use the Touch Type Tool

This tool enables you to work with letters as individual objects.

Creating Outlines is the Past

In the past, one would have to convert the type into outlines to edit the character. With this feature in Creative Cloud, you can now select a character or letter, a single word, or a series of words; change the font; and then scale, rotate, and move your selection (among other things). Its simple and familiar bounding box–like interface brings a whole new level of fun and function to designing with type. We now have total control over type!

Touch Type for a Reason!

This tool is called Touch Type for a reason. If you have Windows 8 touchscreen, a Wacom Cintiq 24HD or any other compatible device with a touchscreen or direct touch devices, it makes the Touch Type tool even more intuitive and cool to use. Just imagine taking a stylus pen or your fingers and doing the changes on your screen without a mouse!

Using the Touch Type Tool:

  1. Type some copy and select a font and size (make it 100pts)
  2. To access the Touch Type Tool, Go to the Character Panel and select Touch Type Tool or
Hover over the Type tool in the toolbox and scroll to the Touch Type Tool

  3. Next, I use the Touch Type tool to select the N in the word ‘Bonus.’ Using the bounding-box handles, I can transform the selected character. The four corner handles give me proportional scale, vertical- or horizontal- only scale, and free movement. The top handle above the bounding box allows me to rotate the character.

  4. The best part is that the text is still live so I can edit and change the content without having to readjust or re-create the transformations. Select the Type Tool and select any character, and change the character.
