How to Work with Type in Photoshop

To create text, we need to click on the type tool. The type tool looks like the ‘T.’ Once you select the type tool, the control panel will change to look like something like below.

Select either the Horizontal Type Tool. The horizontal type tool is the type that goes left to right; the vertical goes from top to bottom. For our purpose’s sake, we will use the Horizontal Type Tool. You can select a colour for the text from the Text Toolbar, click set the text colour.

Begin Setting Text in Photoshop

  1. Click on the image where you want your text to begin. Add text to the image and a new layer will be automatically created.
  2. From the Options toolbar, you can make selections for Font, Size, Style, and Alignment
  3. Type your text. Make your type bigger or smaller, select your text and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl/Cmd Shift < or >

There’s one slight problem when entering the type, as you may have already discovered. When you’ve finished entering your text, your instinct would tell you to press Enter (Win) or Return (Mac) to have Photoshop accept your writing. The problem is, when you hit Enter or Return, instead of allowing your text, Photoshop moves you down to the next line so you can continue typing. So how do we get Photoshop to accept the text and exit us out of typing mode then?

A few methods for Photoshop to accept the text:

  • If you have an extended keyboard with a number pad on it, you can use the Enter or Return key on the number pad.
  • Select one of the other tools from the Tools palette, Photoshop will kick you out of type mode and accept your text at the same time.
  • Temporary Hold down Ctrl/Cmd and Hit return to unselect the text.
  1. To position, the text, make sure that the layer containing the text you want to move is selected, and Temporary Hold down Ctrl/Cmd key, allows you to use the move tool. Click and drag the text to its new location
  2. Remember to select the text with the text tool anytime after you type with the text tool to change the font size, font, colours, and alignment
  3. If you double click on-the-name itself, you change the name of the layer
  4. If you double click the layer itself NOT the name, you can launch the layer styles

Type Effects:

You can enhance your text by using many special artistic effects, including drop shadows, bevel and emboss, and colour overlay. Warning: Using too many types of effects may make the text hard to read to amateurish to unprofessional.

  1. In the Layers panel, double click the layer you would like to enhance. Do not click right on the layer name; click an empty area of the layer.
  2. From the Layer menu > Layer Style > Blending Options. The Layer Style dialogue box appears.
  3. Under Styles, select the desired option. It will be highlighted in grey. Other options for enhancement corresponding to your selection appear under Blending Options on the right of the dialogue box.
  4. Make the desired selections and adjustments.
  5. Click OK.
